English translation:
We very recently mentioned the tremendous contribution that Hyperdub has made to the dubstep scene, by bringing this genre from the clubs to the comfort of our home. A few years after Hyperdub’s debut, followers are starting to break into the music business, inspired by the label’s flagship: Burial.
Lung, a young Welsh artist who has just released his first record with the brand new, London-based record label Kokeshi, can be considered a direct descendant of Burial. His Afterlife/Time EP is directly inspired by the deep, ethereal and vocal atmospheres of Burial. There are so many similarities that some would call him a copycat. However, as this is his first record, it would probably be fairer to praise his ability to synthetise, as his record is well executed and very promising.
Just like his spiritual father, Lung produces listening dubstep: a very round sound filled with pitched voices, deep bass and slow staccato rhythms. What mainly differentiates him from Burial is the clarity of rhythms: when Burial had rather filter in order to get an extremely diffuse and spatialized sound, Lung deploys clear, powerful and more centred rhythms. The atmosphere thus created is more real and probably more accessible to those who still consider Burial too abstract.
As Kokeshi’s second release, Afterlife/Time EP is a real achievement. It is available on 12″, but a digital version can also be bought from various online shops. To get a first taste of the record, visit Lung’s MySpace or Kokeshi’s website where you can find a few excerpts. In any case, we strongly advise you to keep an eye on these two pages to find more about the current releases or the following ones!
